Handwriting lessons in a digital world
In a world of digital learning, it may seem as though handwriting is a lost art. This is hardly the case in Collierville Schools! This past grant cycle, we were pleased to see teachers request materials to help strengthen their students’ handwriting skills. Practicing handwriting is linked to cognitive development and is an important milestone in child development. Teachers in our district have innovatively intertwined the classic skill of handwriting with today’s technology, and here’s how!
Logitech Crayons
As technology becomes more common in the classroom, giving students the resources to bridge the gap between traditional handwriting and digital tools is vital. If you were to peek into an elementary school classroom, you should not be surprised to see tablets or iPads in use. Using a keyboard with this technology is common, but Collierville teachers use tablets to help students strengthen their handwriting skills. Logitech Crayons are fine-tipped, precise tools that work as digital writing utensils. Bailey Station Elementary and Schilling Farms Elementary students received new sets of these styluses. Students from kindergarten to the second grade can trace and outline different words to expand their vocabulary and improve their penmanship.
Boogie Boards
Also heading to Schilling Farms is a set of Boogie Boards – reusable writing tablets designed for classroom use. These mess-free boards allow students to practice their handwriting, drawing and problem-solving without the need for paper and traditional writing tools. Each board is lightweight, portable and easy to use. And while technology can be an excellent tool for students, these boards get students off their devices and excited to show off their writing skills!
